The summer is over and we are heading into a new season of change. Most people take this time of year to put away summer clothes and bring out the fall apparel, organize their closets, drawers, apartments, and homes. Did you know that this is also a perfect time for a "financial cleanup"? We've put together a few tips that will help you get on your way!
Organize your paperwork - What? Paperwork? Yes! Centralizing your paperwork is crucial. You can even buy binders in your favorite colors and separate any upcoming bills, invoices, and statements. Once we know where our money is going we can get a better understanding of the whole picture and make any necessary changes.
Take a look at your expenses - Did you spend a little extra on fun summer activities? Extra nights out in the city? What will your discretionary spending be like now that the cold weather is coming? Take those extra dollars and sock them away in your savings or vacation account.
And finally, Set up a weekly calendar reminder - Once a week dedicate 30 minutes to reviewing your financial tasks and check off at least one item from your list. Tasks may include: pulling a credit report, consolidating online accounts, paying bills, reviewing bank statements and account activity, and shredding old paperwork. This weekly habit is a great way to protect yourself against identity theft AND you may just feel great with every added checkmark!
